The practical use of statistics in business and government

Do you work in a government department? It seems like I am always referencing usage statistics. As a means to measure changes in initiatives from period to period, these statistics are a very important part of day to day operations. We use a quarterly look back period that allows use to measure changes that are taking place and also forecast future requirements for policy formulation. Without this framework of reference it would be very difficult to know whether what we are doing is the right approach or not.
